Lost at Sea (The Skull of Joe R. Grolly)
Beach ceramic, sea glass, copper foil, solder, walnut. 14″× 12″× 12″/ 2012
Inspired by mistaking ceramic beach shards for bone fragments and thinking of how modern waste at one point may be seen as an ancient relic; enough shards were gathered from the coast to create a full scale skull of a fictitious character lost at sea. Over 400 pieces are held together using copper and solder, the teeth made of shaped and filed sea glass.
